چکیده

Two regression estimators were developed for determining densities of late-instar gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), larvae from burlap band and pyrethrin spray counts on oak trees in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. Studies were conducted by marking larvae on individual burlapbanded trees within 15-m diameter plots and recapturing them with pyrethrin sprays to tree crowns at night. Both estimators are based on data that are relatively easy and inexpensive to gather in the field. The estimator for individual trees may be useful in determining relative densities, but the plot estimator, which had an R e of 0.99, can be used with a high degree of confidence for determining absolute densities in plots containing several oak trees. Validation of the plot density estimator at five sites in Maryland demonstrated its utility for sampling late-instar gypsy moth. Both estimators were valid only when previous years' egg-mass densities were •<75/ha and decreased in efficiency when prior year egg masses were •>495/ha. These estimates are best suited for density estimates in sparse or building gypsy moth populations in which other procedures are especially difficult to use or evaluate. FOR. SCI. 35(3):789-800. Characterization and Expression Profiles of Juvenile Hormone Epoxide Hydrolase From Lymantria dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantridae) and RNA Interference by Ingestion

Juvenile hormone epoxide hydrolase (JHEH) is an important enzyme in the degradation pathways of juvenile hormone (JH) in insects. It converts JH to JH diol and hydrolyses JH acid to JH acid diol. JHEH titers regulate the entire process of insect development. In this study, full length ldjheh cDNA (2101 bp) was cloned from the Asian gypsy moth Lymantria dispar (L.; Lepidoptera: Lymantridae), and...

Foliage Damage Does Not Affect within-Season Transmission of an Insect Virus

Gypsy moth defoliation of oak trees has been shown to lead to increased tannin levels, which, in turn, lead to reduced gypsy moth growth and fecundity. In laboratory experiments, increased tannin levels can interfere with the transmission of a virus that is consumed by larvae on oak foliage, and high mortality rates of larvae in the field are sometimes associated with low levels of defoliation....

Sex-specific and hormone-controlled expression of a vitellogenin-encoding gene in the gypsy moth.

Microvitellogenin and vitellogenin cDNA from Manduca sexta (tobacco hornworm) were tested for use as molecular probes to investigate the expression of genes coding for vitellogenins in Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) and Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth). Cross-hybridization was not observed between the M. sexta cDNAs and S. frugiperda DNA and mRNA. Vitellogenin cDNA from M. sexta did not hyb...

Effect of clonal variation among hybrid poplars on susceptibility of gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) to Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki.

Trees in the genus Populus can provide substantial commercial and ecological benefits, including sustainable alternatives to traditional forestry. Realization of this potential requires intensive management, but damage by defoliating insects can severely limit productivity in such systems. Two approaches to limiting these losses include cultivation of poplar varieties with inherent resistance t...

The Effects of Tannic Acid on the Fitness-related Traits of Lymantria Dispar L. Larvae

In this study we investigated the effects of tannic acid on fitness-related traits in gypsy moth larvae from two differently adapted populations. Thirty two full-sib families from oak (suitable host plant, Quercus population), and twenty six full-sib families from locust-tree (unsuitable host plant, Robinia population) forests were reared on artificial diets with or without a 5% tannic acid sup...
